Cross Purposes

If victims of His Majesty's Government, in claiming compensation to which they are legally entitled, can be induced to abandon their claims or to die of natural causes before any money is handed out, ministers will naturally be left with all the more revenue to spend on the important things. Private companies are not, after all, going to pay themselves to turn rivers into sewers, the NHS into a profit-making concern, or knowledge into infoslop. Nevertheless, both the Windrush and the Post Office compensation schemes have been criticised for being too complicated, legalistic and intimidating in their claims process, despite the likelihood that this has resulted in fewer payments. Even after everything they've already been through, some of the Government's victims still seem to think that compensation schemes for the little people have some sort of reason to prioritise anything other than preventing the little people from receiving compensation.
