The increasing importance of India in the world economy was emphasised yesterday when some small but determined entrepreneurs entered a cash machine and gnawed away more than a million rupees. In a blatant metaphor for the global financial system, ordinary mortals were denied use of their money while the strivers performed their accustomed services for hard-working families who played by the rules. Indeed, so heroically was prosperity pursued that one of the venturers appears to have made the ultimate sacrifice, though whether from a burst stomach or a business disagreement remains unclear. Funeral expenses will doubtless be covered by the grateful taxpayer.
