On the other hand, a glorious and brilliant future demonstrably awaits the Lib Dems if they can only find the courage to continue in their new-found role as the Third Party of Thatcherism. The Conservative attack on the public sector is already devastatingly popular, and the Lib Dems' collaborationist zeal in sticking to their own values, instincts and (incidentally) ambitions has engorged their poll ratings to a glittering fourteen per cent. Nobody can predict what might happen to the Lib Dems after five years of more of the same; but it should at least be clear to everyone that there is no more room in their party for disaffected leftists than there is in Britain's other two main right-wing parties.
